Touring Caravan Insurance Online

If you're reading this then it's safe to assume you know the importance of having insurance for your caravan. Nobody wants to experience the upset of having their caravan damaged or stolen precisely when they want to be taking life easy. But life doesn't come with any guarantees. The best you can do is to protect yourself.

Insurance provides you with a safety net, the peace of mind that should, for instance, your caravan become uninhabitable whilst you are on holiday, then you can find alternate accommodation at no cost to yourself. If you don't have that safety net then through no fault of your own you could find yourself with a big hole in your savings, and a great big headache trying finish your holiday.

So what are you actually insuring against when you take out a touring caravan insurance policy? As you'd imagine, different policies provide different coverage, most of which you'll need, and some of which you might not.

Damage and Loss: This is a standard part of insurance policies. Basically, the insurance will pay for damage to, or loss of your caravan. How much it will pay depends on which type of cover you take up. Generally two options are offered: New For Old; Market Value. New for old is generally only available for caravans up to 5 years old. Should you lose your caravan, or should it be damaged beyond economical repair then you will be provided with a brand new replacement caravan. Market value in the same circumstances will pay the market rate of your caravan given its model and age, enabling you to buy another caravan of equivalent value.

Public Liability: This is a standard element of touring caravan insurance policies, and also an important part. Should any member of the general public suffer injury or loss due to your use of the caravan, then they are able to claim against your policy. This is eminently more desirable than what could happen if you weren't insured, namely being pursued through the civil courts for compensation which you would have to pay out of your own pocket. You will probably find that this cover also applies to people you have leant the caravan to, that is providing you have not hired it to them, and also they are not using the caravan for business purposes. But as ever, check the small print. Public liability coverage is normally between £1million and £2million, sometimes it is more, and sometimes this includes any costs.

Contents: You will find that not all caravan insurance policies offer contents coverage as standard. If not, it will be available as an optional extra - with of course extra cost. Even those policies that do provide it as standard are generally fairly limited in their coverage. You will find that at least some if not all of the following items will be excluded: money, credit cards, mobile phones, computers, audio/video devices, valuables, documents. So read the small print and make sure you know what is covered, and make sure you have coverage elsewhere for those items that are not covered.

Continental Use: This comes with many policies but not all, and if you don't take your caravan onto mainland Europe then you can opt for a policy without it, which will probably save you money. Some policies offer repatriation of the caravan, usually up to its insured value, and roadside assistance, up to a set amount as standard, but again not all of them. So if you are going to the continent, then either make sure you have this, or if you don't then know how you are going to deal with such situations. Policies do not cover all of Europe, those excluded are mainly the former Soviet Block countries, for instance Poland, Albania, and Bulgaria. A basic rule of thumb is if you are going beyond France, Germany, Spain and Italy, then check the small print in your policy.

Excess: The excess is the amount you would have to pay yourself before the insurance company will part with any money if you were to claim. So let's say you needed to £700 of repairs to your caravan, and your excess was £200. The insurance company would pay £500 towards the repairs, leaving you to pay the £200 (i.e. the excess). Standard excess amounts vary, and choosing to increase the amount of your excess is a good way to reduce the premium of your insurance policy.

So these are the elements of policies, the great thing now is that you can use the internet to compare what the companies are offering, and find which suits your needs the best, and where to find that cover at the cheapest price. Buying your caravan insurance online gives you a massive advantage because of the availability of information and the access to quotes from different companies. These two elements combined are the beauty of using the internet.

Happy hunting.
